Good session at Bradfield Nr Manningtree Thursday 26th. Tide was 1.30 so not 2 early a start. About 9 peeps turned 4 wings 2 fins 3 windfoils. The wind was swinging to S and W, and was a bit gusty, so sail size as always was a debating point. Consensus was 6 windfoil, 4M wing, Fin 6.5. Wings were going well when the wind dropped to F3 but I struggled to stay airborne using my trusty - 1100FW / 500RW / 105cm Fuse. In the gust I breached a few times as the 500 was at its limits even with a -1.5 spacer. In the moderate winds there were great long rides from Wrabness at the East end of the river to almost Mistley at the West end. Would have given 5 stars but took one away cos the wind would swing almost 90 degs! Fins had a great time staying in the Mid river, where the good gusts stayed up longer. The launch site was almost offshore. On paper my setup is draggy so a little slow at 18.76kts, and after several downwinders I gave up trying to better it, as I breached crashed every time, as the 500 RW was just lifting too much at speed. Prob use 330 next time. Sun never stopped shinning so a great day, and all stayed out till high tide, so prob around 2.5hrs out on the water. Mileage was low at 16nm as struggled in the lulls. I should really adjust setting depending on the wind strength, but I cant really be bothered as changing foil wings and angle spacers are not as easy as a fin. My Starboard Freeride is an excellent board, and I ride in both straps close reaching, just like a fin board, so well happy. Sadly down wind I dont have that skill so have to stand upright most times in that awkward looking stance. I tried burning off a fin sailor, but he left me for dead, no chance. Then I tried to take on a wing, and it was much closer, but he was still ahead and I wasn't gaining. Tried a few gybes, but they were rubbish! Saturday should have more west in it.
